Bullard MX Thermal Imaging Camera

The Mont Vernon Fire Department recently placed into service two (2) Thermal Imaging Cameras. These cameras do not take pictures, but allow us to see the heat signature of objects in real time, even when vision is obscured. They will help us to locate fire victims and occupants in smoky conditions, as well as help us to locate missing firefighters. They will also be useful in locating hidden fire and assessing structural integrity of buildings. They will be instrumental in increasing the safety of the residents of Mont Vernon.

The major funding for this purchase came from the United States government. The United States Fire Administration (USFA) administers the Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program each year. The USFA is part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) which is now part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). In 2002 the Mont Vernon Fire Department was awarded a grant to purchase one Thermal Imaging Camera with accessories and training. The federal funds totaled $19,350.00 and the Mont Vernon Fire Department agreed to match 10%, or $1,935.00.

Additional funding was provided by the estate of Ruth Hanscom. $14,000 from the Hanscom estate completed our required matching fund commitment, and allowed for the purchase of a second Thermal Imaging camera.

The cameras were manufactured by Bullard, and are the MX model. They came with spare batteries, truck mount brackets, and truck mounted chargers. Carrying straps, cases, and transmitters.

Without spending any Town funds, the Mont Vernon Fire Department has purchased and placed into service two (2) Bullard MX Thermal Imaging Cameras.
